  Fighting Cancer with
    State-of-the-Art Technology

We are committed to staying on the cutting edge of lifesaving technologies. We invest millions in equipping our facility, and are frequently the first in the region to acquire new state-of-the-art innovations. Below are some of the capabilities and equipment available at the Cancer Treatment Center.

Technology Distinguishes Us as a Leader in Cancer Treatment

Precise & more effective treatment

Our challenge in radiation therapy is to deliver the maximum allowable dose or amount of radiation to the tumor site, while minimizing radiation exposures to surrounding normal tissues and organs.

Precision is crucial. At The Memorial Cancer Treatment Center our mission is to possess the most advanced technologies to more accurately plan and deliver radiation therapy treatment. The benefits are significant. Better accuracy means more effective treatment - and the potential for better results.

Our new trueBEAM “SUPER” accelerator, appropriately named HOPE, is a testament to our mission. This radiotherapy system is designed to dramatically improve the treatment of cancer. HOPE uses the latest advancements in tumor-destroying radiation to treat cancers throughout the body as it minimizes exposure to surroundings healthy tissues. Once only available in larger “Top Ten” cancer centers around the country, Memorial Hospital has invested Four Million Dollars in YOUR cancer center to provide HOPE to our community.

Different cancers require different types of radiation therapy, and we provide some of the most advanced types of radiation therapy planning, types of radiation therapy and daily treatment options. The caliber of our equipment and its software distinguishes the The Memorial Cancer Treatment Center from other community-based radiation oncology facilities. This technology is evident from the treatment planning through treatment delivery and includes:

Big bore CT-simulator
The advantage of the new CT scanner is that it allows the patient to be imaged in the treatment position. Additionally, a laser system allows us to mark where the radiation will be delivered. Another benefit advantage is the ability to perform 4D gated CT scanning for tumors in the chest and upper abdomen that move during breathing.

4D Gated CT Treatment Planning
This technique combines computer software and multiple CT images to create a picture in motion of the tumor during the patient’s breathing. It allows for better visualization of the treatment area, therefore maximizing the treatment coverage area and sparing normal tissue.

MIM Software
MIM combines a variety of imaging techniques including MRI, CT and PET scans to compare and plan a course of radiation therapy that is individualized for each patient.

Types of Radiation Therapy Available at Our Center

Sereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT)/ Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)
Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) & Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) both use advanced imaging techniques including computerized treatment planning and precise treatment set-up to deliver the radiation dose with extreme accuracy. Between one-to-five treatments are delivered to smaller cancers. The radiation is focused on the tumor with millimeter precision. The result is that less healthy tissue is damaged by radiation. Lung, liver, brain and spinal tumors have been very successfully treated with this technique.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
IMRT is a precise form of radiation therapy currently available. It allows for higher and varied c doses of radiation that conforms to the actual shape of the tumor. It produces fewer side effects and has the increased potential for a cure in some malignances.

Prostate Seed Implant
Prostate seed implant is a brachytherapy method. This procedure involves implanting tiny, low-emitting radioactive seeds, the size of a grain of rice, into the prostate to destroy cancer cells.

Thyroid Treatment
Both benign (hyperthyroidism) and malignant (thyroid cancer) conditions are treated with an oral capsule of radiation called radioactive iodine.

Radioactive Injectables / Radium
Injectables radiation, such as Samarium and Strontium, are used to treat cancer in the bone. Xofigo has been recently approved for prostate cancer involving the bone. They can be used in combination with treatment from our linear accelerator.

Advanced Technology Leads to Superb Cancer Care

HOPE-trueBEAM radiation accelerator
TrueBeam is breakthrough technology in cancer treatment. TrueBeam is a technology offering radiotherapy and radiosurgery options integrated on the same platform in a more convenient way for the patient. It is superior to other methods of treatment because….It is more precise: it provides treatment with a better focus. It is faster: it decreases the duration of sessions. It provides a higher performance treatment process: it reduces the number of sessions a patient will receive.

Vision (RT)
This is a non-ionizing method of tracking patient’s movement while they are receiving treatment. It is an important safety factor that turn off the radiation beam if the patient moves or coughs. This protects the patient from receiving radiation to areas where it was not intended,  thus protecting healthy tissues.

Cone Beam CT (CBCT)
In layman's terms, CBCT is a compact, faster and safer version of the regular CT. With a CBCT scanner, the time needed for a full scan is typically under one minute and the radiation dosage is up to a hundred times less than that of a regular CT scanner. We use this technology to assign alignment of radiation to soft tissues.

Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)
Reproducing a patient’s position on the treatment table is crucial for precise therapy. Several methods are used to accomplish this. Skin markings, body molds, laser lights, ultrasound, and the ExacTrac® system are used. ExacTrac® uses computer software to align bony anatomy or markers placed in tumors for daily treatments.

6 Degree of Freedom Table
Most treatment tables can connect in 3-dimensions. Our new 6 Degree of Freedom robotic correction table uses 6-dimensions and is most valuable for corrections of patient pitch, yaw and rotation. This is particularly useful when treating stereotactic patients as accurately as possible.

BrainLAB ExacTrac®
This new system allows us to image and verify the patient’s position within millimeters just prior to treatment to ensure it is the same as the original alignment. Both linear accelerators use this technique daily on all patients.

High-Energy Linear Accelerator
Linear accelerators or LINACs are the machines that deliver multi-energy radiation. This allows us to treat tumors that are deep in the body, as well as on the surface. Our new TrueBeam can be used in flattering filter-free mode, which allows faster radiation, getting people finished with their treatments quicker on a daily basis.

Multi-Leaf Collimator (MLC)
An optional accessory for a linear accelerator, the multi-leaf collimator consists of 120 fingers or “leaves” that move to produce a radiation beam conforming to each patient’s specific tumor. It helps to spare surrounding healthy tissues from radiation exposure. Both linear accelerators at The Memorial Cancer Center are equipped with these specialized collimators.
